Immune health tips for active living from fitness expert, Eva Redpath
April, 2018After what seems like a never-ending winter, it’s no wonder all you want to do is open the windows, let in the fresh air
and give your home the annual “spring clean.” Just like you would prepare your home for a new season, why wouldn’t you do the same for your body?
The immune system is the defender of your health, making it the perfect place to start preparing for a more active lifestyle. It works to protect you against microorganisms that make you sick, but when it gets run down, your defence against germs and pathogens is lowered. So, what can you do to best support a healthy immune system inside and out in time for spring action? Check out my top five tips below.
When in Doubt, Sweat it Out(side)
Everyone has been told that exercise is important to maintaining your physical and mental wellbeing, but did you know it can affect your immune system too? Incorporating regular exercise into your week is integral for maintaining your general health and therefore a healthy immune system. It also promotes proper circulation, which allows the cells and substances of the immune system to move freely and do their job effectively. Apart from the invigorating fresh air, the Vitamin D you’ll receive from the sun will work to support immunity and reduce the risk of infectious disease.
Strike a Balance
When life is pulling you in every direction, listen to your body to find its perfect balance of MNR – movement, nutrition and regeneration. Your immune system is made up of complex, interconnected components that should be supported in a multi-approach manner. Follow a proper diet of nutrient-dense foods, incorporate exercise to strengthen the body and don’t forget to take time to rest. Not only is sleep vital to maintaining energy levels, it plays a considerable part in fighting illnesses. When your body is at balance, your immune system works better to combat infection, inflammation and stress.
Find Your Zen
Stress is an inevitable part of life, but there are tools you can utilize to help reduce its negative impact. Consider calming, movement-based exercises to help keep the body relaxed. Workouts like yoga promote proper circulation, allowing the cells and substances of the immune system to move freely and do their job effectively. Still feeling emotionally taxed? Meditation has been known to decrease cortisol levels so your mind and body can run at its best.
Breathe into the abdomen, and try this deep, slow, rhythmic, technique through the nose to start your day in a calm, clear, energized way.
Start by closing your eyes.
Inhale 4 counts, hold 4 counts, exhale 6 counts
Do this for one minute.
Before you open your eyes set a positive intention for the day.
Brush Don’t Rush
This one seems suspicious at first, but it actually is beneficial. Dry brushing is a simple technique that uses a natural bristle brush on the skin to support your lymphatic system. Considered a major part of the immune system, the lymphatic system isn’t one to overlook.
COLD-FX Yourself
Last but not least, an optimal immune system involves keeping your body protected from getting sick and if you get knocked down from cold and flu a stronger immune system will help you get back up faster. Taking COLD-FX® Daily Support twice daily can reduce the frequency, severity and duration of cold and flu symptoms by boosting the immune system. When I get busy and am on the go, I find the chewable format convenient to pack and digest without water. Plus, it comes in two delicious flavours – orange and grape. To be sure this product is right for you, always read and follow the label.
