The Sound of Sleep
August, 2020If tossing and turning is part of your bedtime routine, it might be time to switch things up. Whether it’s silence or random noises keeping you awake, sleep sounds can be a solution to quality sleep. Before you turn on the TV or start scrolling through your phone, try some of these sleep-inducing audios:
White noise
White noise is a mixture of different frequency sounds. For sleep, it works in two ways: drowning out any distracting sounds and producing relaxing sounds to calm you for sleep. Other noises that can help you achieve quality sleep are nature sounds (like rainfall or birds chirping) and pink noise (similar to white noise, but smoother). You can find these noises on streaming apps or buy a machine that produces the noise that works best for you.
Bedtime stories
There’s nothing like getting cozy with a great book before bed to help you relax. However, it can be hard to get into a story when you’re sleepy and a ‘page-turner’ might keep you up even longer. That’s where bedtime stories come in. We’re not talking about story books that kids read. These are simple, feel-good, calming stories that often repeat themselves, so you don’t feel guilty dozing off mid-read.
Guided meditation
Guided meditation is an audio of someone leading you through breathing and meditation to help you relax your body. There are many options for sleep on music streaming apps or you can download specific meditation apps. Listening to a guided meditation before bed helps you focus on your body and breath to ease your mind from the stresses of the day. You’ll likely doze off before you finish the meditation – but that’s the point!
